As a professional association for solar technology, the German Solar Energy Society (DGS) is also a recognised organisation for consumer protection issues in this area. The working group PVplug The DGS has developed a standard based on extensive safety analyses carried out with the support of other experts and institutions that enables the safe operation of pluggable AC solar modules in normal household circuits.

We therefore advocate an appropriate approach on a sound technical basis that corresponds to the state of the art and the latest scientific findings. And we contradict claims that the operation of such plug-in solar appliances is associated with higher risks than the operation of other conventional household appliances. The opposite is true.

However, consumers are still being deterred from using these household solar appliances by misleading information and bureaucratic hurdles. With our standard, we want to get the devices out of the grey area of technical standards. The safety standard is intended to reduce uncertainty among consumers, authorities and electrical installers and serves as a catalogue of criteria for manufacturers and suppliers of such devices regarding the technical features of their products.

The manufacturer of plug-in solar devices can have their devices certified by the DGS. Successfully certified plug-in solar devices can be labelled with the logo of the DGS safety standard for plug-in power generation devices DGS 0001:2023-01.
